Newbie - luck trumps judgement!

Postby Elyss » Sun Jun 19, 2011 9:00 pm

Hi, I started this MB thing just today and don't really know what I'm doing but I just had to share what happened to me....

I went with William Hill and Betfair and placed bets according to instructions to get my free bet with WH and refund from Betfair. All went according to plan with me taking a 47p loss. So I went looking for something in the 6 range (back) for my free bet. After getting frustrated at not being able to find anything I eventually stumbled across an event in progress giving 5.8 back and 5.3 lay. So I went for it. The back bet was placed smoothly but by the time I clicked the lay bet through (a matter of half a minute) everything was kicking off and I watched the odds lengthening as it couldn't get matched and the funds I had in Betfair would no longer cover it. Decided to just cancel and put the waste of my free bet down to experience.

Who knew the Czech Republic U21s would score twice in the last few minutes?

Net result - I'm £140 better off after two bets on my first day! All downhill from here I guess, but I promise I have no intention of relying on Lady Luck in the future!!

Ha ha  nice one.
Just don't ever ever be tempted to let a lay bet at long odds go unmatched. Very costly potential
Welcome on board :D

Thanks for the welcome, bigjas, but I have no idea what that means! Won't an unmatched lay bet just get cancelled anyway when the event's over?

Sorry I was tired when I wrote that
What I meant was don't have a matched lay bet running without also covering it with the appropriate back bet at the bookie. At high odds you stand to lose much more than you may possibly gain ( essentially the opposite of your good luck in your above example).
Well spotted anyway ;) you've clearly grasped the concept :D
