Have contacted Blue Square, their reply was 'you are required to place your bet on one selection (Single) to win as opposing to an each-way bet' so does this mean I have to back a football team to win only?

Yes a football team back bet would be to win the game so this is your safest option, although I personally think you could also place a "win" bet on the draw.
The example they have given is for horse racing betting, where not only can you place the win bet but you could also place each way bets to give yourself a better chance of winning.
Bet on any football to team to win just for your own peace of mind.
