Match odds when betting to make money for free

Pray for Rain and Make Money

July 30th, 2009

The cricket makes for a fantastic opportunity to make some extra money.

The UK is ‘blessed’ rainy weather. When it rains you can make some money !!

Here’s how…

When the rain starts place a back bet on the draw in a cricket game. I have found that the best odds are usually found with the bigger bookmakers such as Bet365, boylesports, bluesquare or Coral. ( the other reason for this is that if they see you betting with them they will more likely give you another reload when you stop).

As the rain falls the odds for the draw will drop. The more the rain falls the more the odds will drop.

As the rain finishes then it is time to lock in the profit. Place a lay bet on the draw ( the odds will be less than the back now). To find out how much to lay just use the calculator as you would do so normally.

Now sit back and wait for the game to finish. What ever the result you will have made some extra cash.

I thank you !!

Betfair Trading

July 22nd, 2009

Mike Smith is a professional punter and has been betting on Betfair’s Financial markets since the beginning of 2004, mainly trading the FTSE intraday markets. To coincide with the launch of a new range of Betfair Financial Markets we asked Mike to give a few pointers and look at some of the tools required to complement a successful financial trading strategy…

When I tell people that I trade the financial markets on Betfair successfully, I get a variety of reactions. A common reply is along the lines of: ‘That sounds interesting, I might have a look at that myself’. This implies that people believe trading these markets is something that can be picked up easily.

To be fair I can understand the logic of this reaction as I can almost hear people thinking ‘If he can do it, it can’t be that difficult!’ However as anybody who has done it will tell you, trading the FTSE intraday markets is like riding a big rollercoaster – exhilarating and gut wrenching in equal measure.

To be successful requires a clear strategy that has been tested over time and approaching them without one is a shortcut to the poor house. Alongside your strategy, you also need to have a suite of information that can help you put that strategy into action. Below are a few websites containing resources that can be used in conjunction with your own strategy in the quest for profit.

The first and most obvious requirement is for up to date prices of the underlying market (in my case the FTSE 100 index). Streaming prices can be obtained through subscription sites such as advfn.com or moneyam.com. These sites provide a wealth of information and costs vary depending on the level of information required. Alternatively, Yahoo provides free live FTSE and Dow Jones prices. These are static but can be used in conjunction with an automatic browser refresher to give continuously updated prices.

If you are serious about playing the financial markets, you will need (at the very least) a basic understanding of Technical Analysis (TA) and an excellent introduction can be found at incademy.com. I find TA to be a significant tool in predicting longer term movements of the market but less suited to the short-term intraday markets. However I do calculate simple resistance/support levels using pivot points to indicate possible market reversals. A good explanation of pivot points can be found at investopedia.com.

The FTSE can (and does) spike up or down due to outside influences that are almost impossible to predict. However there are times when sharp movements are a reaction to the release of economic figures. If you want to avoid being on the wrong end of a swing in sentiment it is vital to be aware of the release times of these figures. I use the free financial diary at moneyam.com/marketdiary.php which gives US and Euro Zone as well as UK information.

Using the above resources will provide a number of weapons to your armoury but will not bring instant success. Research and discipline are key components of a successful strategy and nothing can replace time spent trading. Learning expensive lessons is par for the course and it is advisable to start off trading at minimum amounts until you are comfortable with the dynamics of the market you are trading.

If you do get it right and devise a successful strategy, the rewards can be great and with the recent introduction of new Betfair markets (including individual FTSE shares, Intraday Dow Jones and currencies) there is the chance to get involved and establish your strategies as the markets grow in popularity. If you can find an ‘edge’ in one of those markets then you could, with discipline and hard work, be on your way to profitable trading!

After all, ‘If he can do it, it can’t be that difficult!’

Dutching on Tennis

May 4th, 2009

Dutching will be a different concept for most newbies to match betting. It is not for complete beginners.
Lay bets cover the “to not win” scenario. Dutching is similarly back betting on every possible outcome. If you were to back bet on a football game I’m sure you can see that 3 bets will be required to cover all the possibilities, Team A win, Team B win or the draw (3 way dutch).
More than “two way” dutches are for the more advanced money makers out there, so for this reason I am only going to talk about the 2 way dutches. This is where there will be only 2 outcomes, red card/no red card for the footie as opposed to win, lose, draw as above. 2 bets needed just as in back and lay – simple!

You will instantly see that 2 way dutching is perfect for tennis.

If you already have accounts at many bookies this could be a golden arb opportunity. Alternatively if you are looking to complete free bets on the tennis but your chosen bookie has different retirement terms to betfair this could also be good for you.

Advantages:

No exchange commission (unless you are using the exchanges of course!)
Offers that can’t be laid at exchanges due to rule differences (the tennis)
Doing two wager requirements at two bookies simultaneously without needing an exchange.
Good early odds that will be cut by the time the BF market gets going.

Disadvantages:

2 bets are required at bookmakers - it’s usually not possible to know for sure that all your bets will be accepted.
Odds changing - as more bookies are involved, there’s more chance that the odds will get cut while you’re placing your bets, especially if you’re taking a tip from a betting forum. Also, if a bookie cuts odds, they properly cut them, exchanges just drift down a little bit.

You should always have a back-up option if you cant get your chosen bet on, so you can quickly adjust your position for a minimal loss rather than having to gamble. This should be as simple as having a second bookie in mind.

You will need a dutching calc. Luckily there is one on the FEM automatcher to be found as a sticky in a thread not far from here. You will also find a reference tool here Dutching odds, which is most useful when starting out as to what makes good dutching odds. The odds in bold are to be compared against the set next to it as a minimum for a dutch. E.g.you will instantly be able to grasp that if Henman is playing Federer and both players are quoted at odds of 2.0, this is a no loss dutch. If you were qualifying for free bets with 2 different bookies, you are now quids in. What will happen however is that both players will be at different odds eg. A is at 1.9 and the odds for B will need to be a minimum of 2.11 – if they are higher this is an arb – any less and you lose a little – just as in back and lay minor odds differences.

Have a look at the dutching odds spreadsheet and play around with the dutching calc. Dont forget you are betting on both players to win but at different bookies.

If you want to bet on the tennis you also need the rules to be the same at both sets of bookies.

ADVICE where rules differ:
to minimise potential losses and maximise potential gains:
- bet on outsiders at bookies where bets are more likely to stand (eg no1 ball served),
- and favourites at bookies where bets are more likely to be voided (eg no4 match completed)

1. Ball Served
In the event of a match starting but not being completed, the player progressing to the next round will be deemed the winner:

2. Set Completed

5 Dimes
Betfair
Betfred
BetUK
BGbet
Extrabet
Skybet
Sportingbet
Sportingodds
Sunderlands
Totesport

3. Two Sets Completed

Betdaq
Betmate

Sportbet

4. Match Completed
In the event of a match starting but not being completed, all match bets will be void:
10Bet
188Bet
Bet24
Bet365 (specifically says unless a player is disqualified rather than injured)
Betabet
Betboo

Gamebookers
IASbet
Jaxx
Paddy Power
Partybets

As ever these lists cannot be deemed to be totally accurate. Bookies can and do change their offers and rules frequently (to catch out the unwary?). Neither FEM or I can be held accountable for any inaccuracies. The best advice is check the terms yourself to be doubly sure. Please feel free to post any additions/inaccuracies here and I will update this page

Casino Strategy ?

March 19th, 2009

Just while we’re on the topic of free bets I’ve found that Ladbrokes casino is an excellent source of unearned income. Like all these things it relies on you being disciplined and gambling no more than is necessary to get the free offer, so if you’r not then forget it. Anyway, here’s how it works.

Every couple of months they send an Email offering 35 quid of chips if you deposit 35 quid yourself and place bets to the value of at least 70 quid. You then have to gamble the free chips before you can withdraw them. Sounds quite risky I hear you say, but….

Play Blackjack. Use basic strategy. Using £1 a stake you’ll need to play 70 hands (less if you double at all). Remove leftover money and Email to claim free £35. When this is deposited play 35 more hands (20 minutes work in total) and withdraw remaining money.

“BUT, but, but,” I hear you cry - “isn’t this risky? What if you lose lots of hands and your original stake shrinks to almost zero and the same happens with your free stake. You’ll lose out!”

As you may or may not know using basic strategy the casino has only a tiny edge in Blackjack - about 1%. If you played 100 hands at £1 then on average you’d get £99 back out of your hundred quid staked. Here we need to play 105 hands so we expect a return of £104 - i.e. to lose £1 on average. So the most likely outcome is the return of £34 of your £35 stake and all £35 of the £35 free bet - which gives you £34 profit.

The chances of you actually losing money if you play in this way are less than the chances of winning the lottery. The reason we used the small stake is that the greater number of repetitions ensures a greater chance of ending up closer to the average. The total return is therefore £35 in 20 minutes equalling over £100/hour. I don’t know what rate you’re paid at but this is looking good to me….
